Liverpool's Board of Directors have accepted New England Sports Ventures' bid to purchase the club. NESV as you all know by now also owns the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park.
Martin Broughton, Liverpool FC Chairman, said:
"I am delighted that we have been able to successfully conclude the sale process which has been thorough and extensive. The Board decided to accept NESV's proposal on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV's philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at Red Sox."Broughton also revealed that the new owners are committed to acquiring players in January and to building a new stadium. Talks regarding a new 60,000 seat stadium have been going on for years but money problems have stalled advancement towards construction. Liverpool Legend Ray Houghton has suggested that Liverpool and Everton could share the stadium in order to split the costs. A new stadium would increase revenue for both clubs. Arsenal' Emirates Stadium for example makes the club £1million every home match. Emirates hold just over 60,000. Houghton states that:
"It’s something Everton and Liverpool might have to look at. I know the fans want their own identities, but needs must and that’s the position they’re in compared to their rivals. Something has to give."NESV released a statement on their pending aquisition of the club:
"NESV wants to create a long-term financially solid foundation for Liverpool FC and is dedicated to ensuring that the Club has the resources to build for the future, including the removal of all acquisition debt. Our objective is to stabilize the Club and ultimately return Liverpool FC to its rightful place in English and European football, successfully competing for and winning trophies."NESV's purchase can benefit soccer in the United States as New Englanders and "Red Sox Nation" now have one of the top teams in the world to root for. NESV owns 80% of the New England Sports Network, so its safe to say that Liverpool games will be televised in the region exposing people to the excitement of the best league in the world. It can be assumed that as more people get a feel for the game outside of the World Cup and start to follow soccer, then interest in their local MLS club the New England Revolution will increase as well. This is all assumptions, but it looks like it is a win-win for America.
