Robin Van Persie led the Gunners to a vital win against Liverpool in the race for the fourth spot and a chance to play in the Champions League. Dominating for most of the match, the Reds missed a penalty, hit the woodwork twice and got the advantage through a Koscielny own goal before the Arsenal skipper unleashed two goals to place the Gunners in the fourth spot.

Coming from their thrilling Carling Cup victory, the Reds charged in the first half making use of the visitors’ non-existent midfield. Stewart Downing, Luis Suarez and Dirk Kuyt made their plays but it would be Arsenal defender Koscielny who would score the lone goal for the Scousers when he sliced a right-wing cross from Jordan Henderson to his own net. Wasted chances were shown by the Reds when Suarez and Kuyt hit the posts, Martin Kelly bundled Kuyt’s cross and Downing found his volley wide.

They would pay for it dearly come injury time of 8 minutes; Alex Song finds Van Persie and the striker sends a volley past Reina at his near post. RVP has now scored 31 goals in 36 matches this season.
