Are you kidding me?!
The man who punched the referee is Stephano Mwasika. The team he plays for is Young Africans SC, and the team they were playing is Azam FC. Young Africans SC, known as Yanga, were losing 3-1 when this all went down. The defeat left Yanga, the defending champions, in third place with 37 points. Azam FC took the top spot as a result with 41 points. As you can in the video the player are very very angry with referee Israel Mujuni.
Five of the Yanga's players were fined and banned by the Tanzania Football Federation. Stephano Mwasika was found guilty punching the referee. His punishment was a 1 year ban and a 1 million shilling ($626.95) fine by the federation. The other four players involved were Nadir Haroub, Jerry Tegete, Omega Sseme, and Nurdin Bakari. Haroub and Tegete received a 6-month suspension, and Sseme and Bakari received a 3-match suspension.
Yanga gave an explanation for the incident. “The decisions of the referee were poor throughout the match, most of his decisions were premeditated. He simply failed conduct the match in a fair manner,” said Yanga chairman Llyoid Nchunga. Nchunga believed there was a conspiracy to help Azam win and move into first place. “We tried our best to come back to the game but the referees' decision destroyed our rhythm and our players failed to control their frustrations”
Yanga are thinking of appealing the federation's decisions.
